Ten former convicts who had signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry and were due to be sent to fight in Ukraine have escaped from a military training ground near Rostov, according to the news site DonDay and the local outlet 161.ru.
The escape occurred on the night of May 8. The runaways included soldiers who had served prison terms for robberies, murder, drug trafficking, and rape.
According to Donday, the escapees fled just days before they were scheduled to be deployed to the battlefield in Ukraine. Four of them were detained within 24 hours, the outlet reported.
“The whereabouts of two more have already been established. Their arrest is being prepared,” a source told 161.ru.
