Trump administration proposes making Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant 'neutral territory' under U.S. control — WSJ

The U.S. has proposed designating the area around Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant as a neutral zone and placing it under Washington’s control, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing Western officials.

The proposal is part of a document outlining what the U.S. describes as “the outlines of a durable and lasting peace,” as well as possible steps to achieve it. Trump administration officials presented the plan to Ukrainian and European officials during talks in Paris on April 17.

The document also reportedly suggests that the U.S. may be willing to recognize Russian control over Crimea, as well as ruling out Ukrainian NATO membership.

It’s unclear exactly what territory around the nuclear plant would be declared neutral or how the U.S. would oversee it.

According to the Journal, Washington is awaiting a response from Kyiv, which is expected to come during a meeting between U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials in London in the coming days. If the U.S., Europe, and Ukraine reach a consensus, the proposals could then be presented to Russia.
