Journalists confirm deaths of 100,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine

Source: Mediazona

Journalists from Mediazona and BBC News Russian, working with a team of volunteers, have identified the names of 100,001 Russian soldiers killed in the war in Ukraine using open-source data.

“This is still far from the full number, even by our methodology,” Mediazona noted. “Our volunteers have more than 10,000 (10,269) obituaries left to review. Not all of them are unique, and the two figures can’t simply be added together, as some information is duplicated.”

On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Meduza and Mediazona published a joint study estimating the total number of Russian soldiers killed. Using Mediazona and BBC’s confirmed death list alongside data from Russia’s National Probate Registry, they put the figure at 160,000–165,000. This estimate does not include foreign citizens who fought for Russia, including residents of the partially occupied Ukrainian regions.
