‘Conclave’ director Edward Berger to make film about formerly imprisoned WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich

German director Edward Berger will direct a movie about Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter who spent 16 months in a Russian prison after his arrest in March 2023, according to the magazine Deadline. Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists are reportedly in talks over the project.

David Weil, known for the series Citadel and Invasion, is expected to write the screenplay. The film’s producer’s include Amy Pascal, Nick Nesbitt, and Scott Stuber, as well as Gershkovich himself and his mother, Ella Milman.

The project will also include the rights to Gershkovich’s book, which he is currently writing, detailing his work as a WSJ correspondent in Moscow and his time spent in detention in Russia.
