U.S.-Russia talks conclude. Discussions included the war in Ukraine and a possible Trump-Putin meeting.
Talks between Russian and U.S. delegations in Riyadh have concluded, Russian presidential aide and foreign-policy adviser Yuri Ushakov announced, according to Interfax. The negotiations lasted four and a half hours.
Among the topics discussed was the war in Ukraine.
“Yes, we addressed [this issue], presented our fundamental positions, and agreed that separate negotiating teams on this matter will establish contact in due course,” Ushakov said.
He also confirmed that the possibility of a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump was raised but said it was unlikely to take place next week.
“This issue was discussed, and we will work to create the conditions for such a meeting,” he said.
Ushakov described the talks as “very serious” and said they went “quite well.” Both sides, he noted, had agreed to consider each other’s interests while working to improve bilateral relations. “Both Moscow and Washington are interested in this,” he added.
When asked whether Russia and the U.S. were moving closer, Ushakov said it was “hard to say for now” but acknowledged that the issue had been part of the discussions.
Russia was also represented in the talks by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. The U.S. delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Kyiv will not recognize the results of the Russia-U.S. talks in Riyadh.
