Russian forces launched a large-scale strike on Ukraine overnight on December 30-31, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Air raid sirens sounded across the country around 8 a.m. local time.

The Air Force reported that Russian troops targeted multiple regions with aerial missiles and warned of a potential threat from ballistic missiles. Drones have also been attacking Ukraine since the early hours.

In the Kyiv region, there was an explosion near Vasylkiv, Ukrainska Pravda reported. Shortly after 8 a.m., explosions were heard in Kyiv itself. Authorities said air defense systems were actively working to repel the attack. Debris from a missile fell onto the roof of a private home but did not cause a fire or significant damage, according to the city’s military administration.

In the Sumy region, Russian forces struck infrastructure in Shostka with missiles, local officials said. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
