Russian ship reportedly fired signaling ammunition at German military helicopter in Baltic Sea

Germany’s dpa news agency reported Wednesday that a Russian ship in the Baltic Sea fired signal ammunition at a German military helicopter. 

According to the agency, the incident was mentioned by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on the sidelines of the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting in Brussels. It’s unclear when the incident occurred.

The report noted that signal ammunition is used only in emergency situations. According to dpa, the helicopter was conducting a surveillance mission over the Baltic Sea. Baerbock reported announced an increase in patrols in the region to protect critical infrastructure.

Later on Wednesday, Reuters reported that a German Defense Ministry spokesperson had said he could not confirm the incident.

The Russian authorities have not commented on the reports.
