Over 220 arrested in Georgia since protests erupted over prime minister’s suspension of E.U. talks

A total of 224 people have been arrested in Georgia since protests erupted last week following Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s announcement that the country’s E.U. accession talks would be suspended until the end of 2028, according to the Interior Ministry.

Many of the detainees face charges of disobeying police and disorderly conduct. Two protesters have been charged with serious offenses for allegedly attacking police officers and committing arson, which could result in up to seven years in prison.

The police also reported that 113 Interior Ministry officers were injured during the protests, with four currently receiving treatment in medical facilities.

Meanwhile, multiple journalists have reported being beaten and targeted with pepper spray by security forces.
