In the early hours of Monday, November 25, Ukraine fired another ATACMS barrage at the Kursk region, Russia’s military reported later in the day. According to information shared on social media, eight missiles were launched at a largely vacant airfield. (According to the Telegram channel “Military Informant,” Russia has been hurrying to build reinforced concrete shelters for aviation at this location.)
The Ukrainian project KiberBoroshno geolocated the footage and concluded that the strikes hit the Kursk Vostochny airfield, which houses Russia’s Khalino Airbase — approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Kursk.
One video shows two cluster munitions strikes near a launch site for air defense interceptor missiles. In the footage, at least five ATACMS missiles armed with cluster warheads hit the airbase. Meduza verified another video recorded near a supermarket on Kursk’s outskirts close to the Khalino airfield.
On Monday, the Defense Ministry and the Kursk governor’s office claimed that Russian air defense systems intercepted seven to eight ballistic missiles overnight. However, officials offered no further details on the locations of these attacks or the types of incoming missiles.
Last week, the monitoring project Frontelligence Insight reported that Russia was adding concrete blocks to existing structures at airfields within ATACMS range following U.S. President Biden’s decision to permit Ukrainian attacks inside Russia using the longer-range weapons.
