Abkhazia’s separatist president walks back weekend offer to resign, will try to wait out protests after all
On Sunday, the president of Georgia’s Russian-backed separatist region of Abkhazia vowed to remain in office despite ongoing protests demanding his resignation. Aslan Bzhania told the Russian state news agency TASS that his administration has failed to reach any compromise with Abkhazia’s opposition.
For several days, the breakaway Georgian republic has witnessed demonstrations against a proposed investment agreement with Moscow that critics say would unfairly favor Russian business interests.
“My position is unchanged; I made a statement and reiterated it today. This is the position of the president, the government, and the authorities of the Republic of Abkhazia, and it will remain unchanged,” Bzhania told TASS, walking back comments a day earlier when he said he was willing to step down if protesters vacated government buildings.
