Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov plans to visit Malta to attend a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on December 5–6, ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Friday.
A Maltese Embassy representative told the Russian newspaper Vedomosti that the decision to hold the meeting in the country “applies to all [OSCE] members, including the Russian Federation.” The official did not comment on the fact that Lavrov is currently under E.U. sanctions.
If Lavrov attends the meeting, it will be his first trip to an E.U. country since Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022.
