Eight cars of a Kazan–Adler passenger train derailed in Russia’s Volgograd region on Monday after the train collided with a truck that had driven onto the tracks, according to Russian Railways.

TASS, citing the regional Health Ministry, reported that five people required hospitalization. According to the Telegram channel Shot, at least 140 people were injured in the incident. The truck driver has also reportedly been hospitalized.

Russian Railways stated that the driver drove onto the tracks “while the signal was functioning correctly and the train was approaching.” The Telegram channel Mash wrote that, according to preliminary information, the driver did not see the train because trees were blocking his view.

Train traffic has been suspended on the section of tracks where the collision occurred.
