At least 16,500 people came to Navalny’s funeral and burial, says crowd monitoring organization

No fewer than 16,500 people came to Alexey Navalny’s funeral and burial in Moscow’s Maryino district on Friday, according to the White Counter organization, which monitors the number of people at mass events.

The figure is based on a count of the people who crossed the Brateevskaya Bridge from 3:06 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. as Navalny’s body was taken from the church on one side to the cemetery on the other. The organization said that the number could include a few people crossing the bridge for unrelated reasons, but noted that pedestrian traffic across the bridge is usually minimal.

White Counter acknowledged that the number does not account for a “significant portion of people” who left immediately after the service and went directly to the subway. It also does not include people who came to the cemetery from a subway station on the other side of the bridge.
