Unidentified drones frequently targeting German military bases where Ukrainian soldiers are trained

Source: Meduza

German military bases have been regularly targeted by unidentified drones, reports German outlet Bild.

According to the outlet, drones appear near the military facilities on a weekly basis. The German military has been aware of the problem for over a year. In October 2022, one German general instructed military police officers to be urgently trained in anti-drone devices. In mid-November 2023, the German Armed Forces established a task force to combat illegal drone flights, though it’s not clear whether the task force has started operating.

Bild notes that the drones most frequently appear over training grounds for Ukrainian soldiers. “Drones are regularly spotted over the Klitz military training ground, where the Bundeswehr [German Armed Forces] trains Ukrainians on Leopard 1 [tanks],” said Marcus Faber, a member of Germany’s Free Democratic Party and a member of the country’s Defense Committee.

Faber, along with the German military, believes that Russia may be behind the drone appearances, though this has not yet been confirmed.
