Update: One person was killed in the missile strike, reports Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. According to him, the man died from shrapnel wounds. Five others were injured in the attack, said Gladkov.
Russian air defense systems shot down 17 Vilkha missiles over the Belgorod region, the Russian Defense Ministry reported. The ministry accused the “Kyiv regime” of the attack.
Around noon local time, air defense systems shot down four missiles, according to the ministry. Subsequently, air defense destroyed five more rockets on their approach to Belgorod, TASS reported. Later, air defense systems shot down another eight missiles over the region.
Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that one man was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds and a woman suffered a laceration to her left wrist. Rocket fragments damaged a retail space and several cars.
In the morning, an air raid alert was announced in Belgorod. Residents complained that some shelters were sealed or locked. At 2:27 p.m. local time, Gladkov announced another alert.
