Satellite images show damage to Russian-occupied Berdyansk airfield after Ukraine’s October 17 strike

Planet Labs satellite images showing the Russian-occupied Berdyansk airfield on October 18 were published by Schemes, a project from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Ukrainian Service. The images show part of the Berdyansk airfield runway, including what Schemes says are missile strike sites.

On Tuesday, Ukraine said it had hit airfields in Berdyansk and Luhansk, destroying nine helicopters, an air defense system, military equipment, and an ammunition depot, as well as damaging runways. It is believed that the airfields were hit by ATACMS missiles, which, The Wall Street Journal reports, the U.S. secretly provided to Ukraine in small numbers.

Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels published photos allegedly taken in Berdyansk that show recognizable parts of an ATACMS missile. The photos have yet to be verified.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not comment on the reports of strikes in Berdyansk and Luhansk.
