Sweden says Baltic Sea telecommunications cable damaged

Sweden reported damage to a telecommunications cable that runs between Sweden and Estonia along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, says Swedish newspaper Expressen, citing statements by Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson and Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin.
Swedish authorities said the damage occurred around the same time as a similar incident involving the Balticconnector pipeline between Finland and Estonia.
The cause of the damage is unknown. Bohlin said that Sweden and Estonia were working together to investigate the incident.
A leak in the Balticconnector pipeline was detected on October 8. An official statement posted by Finland’s President’s Office said it was likely “caused by external activity.”
