Jailed Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny faces 30 more years in prison as new ‘extremism’ trial begins
The first hearing in the latest criminal case against Alexey Navalny has begun in Russia’s Vladimir region, in the prison where the opposition leader is being held.
Navalny is facing numerous charges, including calling for “extremism,” creating an “extremist community,” and rehabilitating Nazism. If convicted, he could face up to 30 additional years in prison.
Journalists have been barred from entering the courtroom, as have Navalny’s own parents. Footage of the hearing is being broadcast to a separate location for observers, but according to Mediazona, the poor quality of the video makes it impossible to understand what is being said in the court.
