Maria Pevchikh named chairwoman of Anti-Corruption Foundation

Maria Pevchikh has been appointed the new chairwoman of the board of directors of the international Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF), according to a series of posts on Alexey Navalny’s social media accounts.

Navalny wrote, “Her public work over the past two years has made her a bright political leader. You know her well, and I have no doubt that she will do a fine job in her new capacity as well.”

The politician commended Volkov’s move to step down voluntarily: “In our opinion, one of these rules is for leaders to be responsible for their decisions. This includes the most important form of responsibility which is, unfortunately, practically absent in Russia - voluntary responsibility…”

Navalny also commented on former chairman Leonid Volkov’s departure, writing the letter he wrote to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell was, “politically incorrect, technically inaccurate and misleading.” However, Navalny left the door open for Volkov to continue in some capacity:

It is up to Leonid to decide where he will focus his work from now on. We are not a government organization with positions and posts. We have a formal structure, and ACF is a key part of it, but on the whole, we’re a political movement, a voluntary union of like-minded people (or, to use the Kremlin’s terminology, an extremist community). And there will always be a place within it for such an outstanding political manager as Leonid has proven himself to be on numerous occasions.
