Krasnoyarsk Krai governor’s son who was arrested in Italy at U.S. request asks to be extradited to Russia
Russian national Artem Uss, who was arrested in Italy on sanctions evasion and money laundering charges at the request of U.S. authorities in October, has asked a Milan court to extradite him to Russia, according to La Repubblica. Uss is the son of Krasnoyarsk Krai Governor Alexander Uss.
Italian authorities have reportedly not yet decided how to proceed with Uss’s case. According to Italian media reports, Uss’s lawyers insist that their defendant will be at risk of facing discriminatory treatment if he’s held in an American prison. The defense team has also claimed that U.S. authorities intend to use Uss in a future prisoner swap, possibly in exchange for jailed former U.S. marine Paul Whelan.
