A Russian court has sentenced former Perm State University student Timur Bekmansurov to life imprisonment for carrying out a mass shooting at his school in September 2021.

Bekmansurov, who was 18 at the time of the incident, killed six people and injured more than 40. He himself was injured during his arrest and later had one leg amputated.

Life imprisonment was the sentence requested for Bekmansurov by prosecutors. In his closing statement, Bekmansurov said that he regrets his actions, promised to use his disability pension to reimburse his victims for their losses (though they’ve sued him for more than 18 million rubles, or about $250,000), and asked not to be given the maximum sentence.
