Most of the territory and buildings of St. Petersburg’s Kresty Prison will be put up for sale by the state corporation Dom.rf, according to RBC.

The company, which is currently in the process of taking over the complex from Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service, has vowed to consult with the St. Petersburg authorities and local residents as well as experts and possible investors “so that the territory gets new, in-demand functions while remaining part of the tourist infrastructure.”

The Kresty prison is one of the most famous in Russia. Its brick buildings, which are in the shape of crosses, were built in the late 19th century on the bank of the Neva River. Numerous political prisoners have done time in the prison.
