Ravil Maganov, the chairman of the board of Russian oil producer Lukoil, has died after falling from a hospital window in Moscow, Interfax reported on Thursday, September 1.
The 67-year-old was being treated at Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital and allegedly fell from the sixth floor. “This morning Maganov fell from a window of a Central Clinical Hospital ward. He died from his injuries,” an informed source told Interfax.
The Central Clinical Hospital confirmed Maganov’s death in a comment to RIA Novosti, but gave no further details. In a press statement, Lukoil said that Maganov “passed away following a severe illness.”
According to the Telegram channel Mash, Maganov was being treated for heart problems and had been diagnosed with depression. An anonymous source told RIA Novosti that the oil executive likely died by suicide. However, this has not been confirmed independently.
The Telegram channel Baza reported that Maganov “may have accidentally fallen” off a balcony while smoking.
Lukoil, Russia’s largest privately held oil producer, is one of the few Russian companies that has publicly urged Moscow to end its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. “Calling for the soonest termination of the armed conflict, we express our sincere empathy for all victims, who are affected by this tragedy. We strongly support a lasting ceasefire and a settlement of problems through serious negotiations and diplomacy,” the company’s board said in statement in March.
Maganov joined Lukoil’s board of directors in 1993 and became board chairman in 2020. He had also served as the company’s first executive vice president since 2006.
In May, Russian police opened a criminal case after Lukoil top manager Alexander Subbotin was found dead in the basement of a house near Moscow.
