Former premier of Russia’s North Ossetia arrested on embezzlement charges

State investigators in Russia’s North Ossetia have arrested the republic’s former premier, Sergey Takoev, on charges of embezzlement on an especially large scale.

The Russian Investigative Committee announced Takoev’s arrest in a press release published on August 10. North Ossetia’s former tourism minister Alan Diambekov was arrested alongside Takoev, as was Aida Gabaraeva, the CEO of a commercial firm.

The Investigative Committee didn’t provide any further details about the embezzlement case.

Sergey Takoev was the head of North Ossetia’s government from 2012 to 2015. He was previously accused of embezzlement in 2006. According to prosecutors, during his time as president of FC Alania Vladikavkaz, Takoev spent money on the soccer club that was intended for protecting the region’s administrative border with Ingushetia. Takoev was fully acquitted by the court.
