Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko spoke over the telephone for the second time in 24 hours on Sunday, August 16. Moscow now confirms what the Belarusian president stated on Saturday: Russia has agreed to provide “all necessary assistance” to resolve the security problems in Belarus, following last week’s contested presidential election and “external pressure” on the Belarusian state.
According to a Kremlin readout published online, Russia will act in accordance with the principles of the Union State Treaty and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
