Russia overtakes Germany in reported coronavirus cases, as total patient count nears 200k

On the morning of May 8, Russian officials announced that the country recorded 10,699 new coronavirus infections in the past day (there were 11,231 new cases the day before) bringing the nation’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 187,859 patients.

Another 98 people reportedly died from the disease, raising Russia’s total number of fatalities caused by COVID-19 to 1,723. As many as 26,608 people in Russia are known to have recovered fully, including 2,805 in the past day.

Russia says it’s conducted more than 4.9 million coronavirus tests, so far, including 184,000 in the past day.

According to data published by The New York Times, Russia has overtaken Germany and become the country with the fifth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, after the United States, Spain, Italy, and Great Britain.
