Moscow’s Basmanny Court has ordered the five former police officers directly involved in the arrest of Meduza special correspondent Ivan Golunov to be jailed for two months as they await trial, according to Mediazona.
The defendants, who stand accused of exceeding their authority, falsifying evidence, and illegal drug possession, will be held in a pretrial detention center until March 29. All but one of them have pleaded not guilty, including Igor Lyakhovets, whom investigators believe coordinated Golunov’s illegal arrest.
Maxim Umetbayev has pleaded guilty in part. He claims that he did use force against Golunov but that he was not involved in falsifying any evidence.
