On Friday, Russia’s federal censor, Roskomnadzor, added the website Gay.ru to its Internet blacklist for spreading so-called “gay propaganda,” banning the site in accordance with a court order from the Altai district. The court reached its ruling despite Gay.ru’s warning to readers that its content is intended exclusively for adults.
Established in 1997, Gay.ru is one of Russia’s oldest LGBT websites. “Gay propaganda” in the presence of minors has been illegal in Russia since 2013.
