The head of Russia’s Federal Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, has slapped the wrist of Dmitry Peskov, Vladimir Putin’s long-time spokesman, criticizing him for campaigning for the president while acting as the Kremlin’s representative. Pamfilova’s reprimand carries no punishment, but Peskov has already apologized and says he will refrain from such remarks in the future.

On January 29, Peskov was asked whether politician Alexey Navalny presents a political threat to Putin. The Kremlin’s spokesman responded: “Vladimir Putin’s popularity goes far beyond Russia, and it’s doubtful that anyone could dispute that Putin is the absolute leader of public opinion and the absolute leader of [our] political Olympus, let’s say. At this stage, hardly anyone can seriously compete with him. Putin has repeatedly proven his unquestionable leadership and he continues to do this further.”
