Russian-German dual citizen “Sergey V.” has confessed to detonating several bombs aboard a bus for the German soccer team “Borussia Dortmund.” The man said in court on January 8 that he regrets his actions and said he was only trying to create the appearance of damage to the vehicle, without injuring anyone.

He said he hatched the plan after a rough breakup with his girlfriend, who left him and moved to Australia. The man said he flirted with the idea of suicide, before deciding to try to help his parents by making some money. By damaging the soccer team’s bus, he hoped to drive down the value of “Borussia,” in order to profit on the stock market.

On April 11, 2017, three radio-controlled bombs detonated aboard a bus for the German soccer team “Borussia Dortmund,” injuring defender Marc Bartra and a nearby police officer. German investigators later arrested “Sergey V.,” after discovering that he’d purchased a stock exchange contract awarding him profits if Borussia’s share value fell. It’s unknown if he managed to earn any money thanks to the bus explosion.
