The St. Petersburg police force's secret American veteran

A court in St. Petersburg has sentenced a former police officer to two years in prison for failing to disclose when he was hired that he’d previously served in the U.S. military.

Russian agents first started investigating Sergey Kulakov in September 2016, after a local businessman being probed for fraud produced evidence that Kulakov has American citizenship. The website Fontanka later published photos showing Kulakov dressed in an American military uniform. Kulakov, then an officer on the St. Petersburg police force, denied the charges, saying the photos were fake.

Investigators say they found no reason to suspect that Kulakov joined the city’s police force to undermine Russia’s national security.
