Vyacheslav Volodin has been confirmed as the new speaker of the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament. His candidacy was supported by 404 members of the Duma.

Communist Dmitry Novikov was also in the running for the post of Speaker.

Alexander Zhukov (from United Russia) and Ivan Melnikov (from the Communist Party) have been appointed First Deputy Speakers. Six additional deputy speakers have been appointed, among them Irina Yarovaya, Sergei Neverov, Vladimir Vasiliev, and Pyotr Tolstoy (all of whom are from United Russia), as well as Igor Lebedev (from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia) and Olga Yepifanova (from A Fair Russia).

Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Volodin be appointed speaker. The candidate was supported by pro-Kremlin political party United Russia, which has a constitutional majority in parliament.

Since 2011, Volodin has held the post of first deputy head of the presidential administration. In this position, he was responsible for the internal politics of the Russian Federation.
