Svetlana Babaeva is stepping down as chief editor of the popular, once vigorously independent news website Gazeta.ru. Her contract as head of the outlet has ended. It remains unclear who will take her spot.
“My time at Gazeta was an exciting time. I had a great experience, and I learned a lot of new things and skills that I want to believe I can apply in the future. And the team at Gazeta is an amazing one that I hope will be kept on and continue to work,” Babaeva said.
Svetlana Babaeva has been Gazeta.ru's chief editor since 2013. Before her tenure, in a relatively short span of time, the website had several different chief editors. Their dismissals and resignations are believed to be connected to the website's independent coverage of Russia's parliamentary elections in 2011 and presidential election in 2012.
