A senior citizen living in Nizhny Novgorod has appealed to regional officials, asking the government to buy from her or subsidize the storage of roughly 320 kilos (700 pounds) of buckwheat, which she purchased at the end of 2014.

According to Mikhail Teodorovich, head of Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service in Nizhny Novgorod, the woman spent four months worth of pension payments on buckwheat.

“It’s impossible for her to eat it all. Even the mice are struggling,” Teodorovich said, calling on locals to be reasonable about their shopping and avoid a panic. Teodorovich stressed that this episode was an isolated incident and said he hopes not to learn of any similar cases in the future.

“The woman appealed to the regional government for help with managing her buckwheat, asking officials to buy it from her or subsidize its storage,” said the head of Russia’s Federal Monopoly Service in Nizhny Novgorod.

The price of buckwheat rose at a record rate in the fall of 2014, climbing by more than 54 percent in November alone. Authorities have explained the rise in prices as the result of a crop failure in the Altai region and rumors about shortages that have led to panic buying.
