Ukraine’s defense minister wanted the army’s top general fired. Zelensky fired the minister instead. Here’s how all three explain it.

On July 15, it emerged that Mykhailo Fedorov would resign as Ukraine’s defense minister, a post he had held for just six months. Rallies in support of Fedorov began across Ukraine, and European Union officials expressed surprise and demanded an explanation from President Volodymyr Zelensky. Even before the resignation, Ukrainian media had reported a conflict between Fedorov and Ukraine’s commander in chief, Oleksandr Syrsky. Fedorov later confirmed the rift himself. Fedorov: When I took over the Defense Ministry and saw the state of the army, I proposed dismissing Syrsky. Zelensky refused, and I accepted that. But Syrsky issued an ultimatum — him or me. Instead of working out how to defeat Russia, he’s working out how to split the country.

Zelensky: I would very much like to see unity. The two of them couldn’t find it. I’m simply saying that if they can’t resolve this themselves, I’ll have to resolve it myself. I’m confident Fedorov will stay on my team.
