Prime Minister Donald Tusk says Poland prevented a possible provocation on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave after spotting ‘people with flashlights’

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said authorities had prevented a possible provocation at the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region. He spoke before a cabinet meeting, RMF 24 reported.

Tusk said he received a report from the Border Guard shortly after midnight about “concerning activity” along the Russian border, where some “people with flashlights” had been spotted.

“We mobilized the necessary personnel and resources very quickly and managed to prevent an attempted provocation,” Tusk said.

RMF 24 reported that the people with flashlights were spotted near the town of Sępopol in Poland’s Warmian-Masurian province. No one crossed the Polish border.

Tusk said the incident came after Polish authorities received a warning from intelligence services and NATO allies that an act of sabotage or a provocation could occur at the Russian border in early November. In response, Poland stepped up border security.

In recent months, Polish authorities have increasingly warned of a threat from Russia. Tusk said in September that, according to intelligence services, Russia was planning “hybrid” attacks using missiles and drones against countries supporting Ukraine. U.S. authorities had warned Poland that Russia could also stage provocations involving the banking system, Newsweek reported.
