Estonia plans to build 150 bunkers on border with Russia
Estonia plans to build about 150 bunkers in Ida-Viru County, along the border with Russia, Defense Minister Martin Herem said during a question-and-answer session in the Riigikogu, the Estonian parliament, responding to a question from lawmaker Arvo Aller.
Aller asked what national defense measures are planned for Ida-Viru County and whether the state intends to acquire private land along the Narva River to plan its actions in the border zone.
“As part of the construction of the Baltic defense zone, for example, around 150 bunkers are planned in Ida-Viru County, 100 of which will be on state land and about 50 on municipal or private land,” Herem said.
He added that if private land is needed for the bunkers, possible solutions include compensating landowners for the inconvenience, leasing the land, or purchasing it.
The Baltic states have steadily strengthened their defenses in recent years amid fears of aggression from Russia. Estonia installed stationary drone detection and monitoring equipment along its border, while Finland completed a 200-kilometer (124-mile) fence along its border with Russia. Lithuania is also building a barrier along its border with the Kaliningrad region.
