Russia proposes raising maximum age for women’s military service
The Russian government has submitted a bill to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, that would raise the maximum age for women in military service from 45 to 50. The bill appears in the State Duma’s database.
The bill would also raise the maximum age for women to remain in the reserves: to 55 for officers, up from 50, and to 50 for those with other ranks, up from 45.
The explanatory note says the bill is necessary to create “additional social guarantees for female service members.” Its authors say the current maximum age for military service does not always allow women to serve long enough to qualify for a pension and other benefits.
For example, a woman who signs a contract between ages 25 and 30 and serves in a location “where preferential pension service credit does not apply” may not receive subsidized housing or a pension after reaching the maximum age for military service.
The government also stressed that, amid the war with Ukraine, most of the personnel in medical units are women service members, “including those who have reached (or are reaching) the maximum age for military service.”
In July 2023, Vladimir Putin signed a law that raised the maximum age for remaining in the reserves by five years for certain citizens holding military ranks. The amendments set new age limits for soldiers, sailors, sergeants, petty officers, warrant officers, and midshipmen.
