Trump says talks in NYC with Zelensky will cover Russia–Ukraine negotiations and Patriot interceptor production in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump have begun their meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Before their closed-door talks, they spoke to the press.
Answering reporters’ questions, Trump said he would discuss the status of negotiations with Russia, the production of Patriot interceptor missiles in Ukraine, and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he again said are driving up global diesel prices.

Update: Zelensky and Trump’s closed-door talks lasted 40 minutes. Afterward, the Ukrainian president spoke to reporters again. He said Kyiv is ready for a complete ceasefire with Moscow on attacks against energy infrastructure, but that it must be reciprocal. “If we don’t attack each other’s energy facilities, then [we don’t attack] any energy facilities. That’s our proposal,” Zelensky said. He added that the U.S. will convey this position to Russia.
After Trump was reelected to a second term, the U.S. began mediating negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The talks were suspended in early 2026 as the U.S. entered the war with Iran. In August, however, the U.S. resumed its mediation efforts. CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Trump’s special envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow and later met with Zelensky.
Among other issues, the two sides discussed a mutual halt to attacks on energy facilities. Trump even announced that Russia and Ukraine had reached an energy truce, but it quickly became clear that he had spoken too soon. The latest round of U.S.-mediated talks has so far produced no results, but both Ukraine and Russia have said they are willing to continue talks.
