Luxembourg’s international airport — the country’s only one — suspended operations for several hours on the evening of Friday, September 18, after “unauthorized unmanned aircraft” were spotted, the airport said on its website.

The drones were detected near the airport and directly over its grounds.

“The temporary suspension of flight operations was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers, airline crews, airport personnel and aircraft,” the statement said.

The airport gave no further details about the intruding drones.

In 2025, airports in several European countries halted operations because of unidentified drones. Drones were spotted over airports in Oslo and Copenhagen, in particular.

In August 2026, a drone rigged with explosives was found at the Leipzig airport, near a Ukrainian An-124 transport plane carrying ammunition. It later emerged that there had been several drones. On September 1, German authorities formally accused Russia of attempted sabotage at the airport. Moscow denies the accusations.
