Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he would announce two decisions at noon on September 9: one dissolving the National Assembly, the country’s parliament, and another calling early elections.

“I need to make two decisions in accordance with the Constitution and the Law on the President. The first is a decree dissolving the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. The second is a decision calling elections. […] Elections in Serbia will be held on October 25,” Vučić said on RTS, Serbia’s public broadcaster.

He urged everyone to “refrain from violence” during the election campaign. “I know some people will blockade university buildings again, and I ask them not to. If they do, they will be hurting themselves and the people of Serbia, other students, and professors,” Vučić said.

Vučić said he would accept the election results, whatever they may be, and congratulate his opponents if they win.

Mass protests against Vučić have continued in Serbia for nearly two years, beginning after the collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station in Novi Sad killed 16 people on November 1, 2024.
