Russia drops Communist Party candidate from State Duma race for posting a photo of Navalny

Russia’s Central Election Commission has canceled the registration of Communist Party candidate Nikolai Bondarenko in the race for the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, the Russian business daily Vedomosti reported. Twelve commission members voted for the decision, and one voted against it.

A court in Saratov fined Bondarenko 1,000 rubles in August under an administrative statute barring the display of extremist symbols, after he posted a photo of Alexey Navalny to his Telegram channel.

That statute bars anyone fined under it from running for office for the following year. Bondarenko challenged the fine, but a regional court in Saratov rejected his appeal on September 4.

Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin was removed from an election in similar fashion, fined under the same statute over a photo of Navalny. He subsequently left Russia.

In August, election officials removed Yabloko’s party list — the only party on the ballot with an antiwar platform — from the race for the State Duma.
