Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine must end.

The two leaders met in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, where the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is underway.

“Every day of war sets humanity back. We must work toward ending hostilities,” Modi said, according to News18, an Indian television channel.

“We will keep supporting peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. […] We must move from endless war to end of war. This is India’s message. We need end of war, not endless war,” Modi said.

In late July, during talks with Putin in Omsk, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for a “freeze” in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and a return to negotiations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov soon said that, given Kyiv’s position, “such a freeze is not possible.” “For us, there is a main condition — we must achieve our goals,” he said.
