Armenia says it won’t block Russians fleeing a new mobilization

Alen Simonyan, secretary of Armenia’s Security Council, told TV Rain, the independent Russian broadcaster, that Armenia will not block Russians from entering the country if Moscow announces a new mobilization.

TV Rain journalist Yekaterina Kotrikadze asked Simonyan whether Armenia was prepared to accept a new wave of Russians seeking to avoid being sent to the front.

Here’s what he said:

No one at the border is going to ask anyone why they came here. As you know, people can come here from Russia using only their internal passports. To Russians, all I can say is: “Welcome to Armenia.” We love and respect everyone here. They’ll find everything they came to Armenia looking for here, and they’ll go back to Russia whenever they want. Armenia won’t stand in their way, and if they need help, we’ll help.

Russia could announce a new mobilization after elections to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, according to sources who spoke to Meduza and other outlets, as well as Ukrainian authorities.

The Kremlin calls these reports “media hoaxes.” Ahead of Russia’s 2022 mobilization, it also denied that one would be announced.

Amid the rumors, Russians have started turning to human rights activists more often for advice on relocating abroad. According to the rights group Kovcheg (“The Ark”), Armenia and Georgia are the countries they are most interested in.
