Russia already drove TV Rain into exile. Now it’s coming for the two executives who kept the channel alive.
Russian authorities have opened a criminal case against Natalya Sindeyeva, the chair of TV Rain’s board of directors, and Mark Ten, the channel’s general director, accusing them of organizing the activities of an undesirable organization, the Russian state news agency TASS reported, citing law enforcement agencies.
Sindeyeva and Ten face two to six years in prison under Part 3 of Article 284.1 of Russia’s Criminal Code.
Russia blocked broadcasts by TV Rain after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Facing the threat of prosecution, its journalists were forced to leave the country, and the channel’s main studio is now in the Netherlands.
Sindeyeva founded TV Rain, and Ten took over as general director in April 2024.
Russia’s Justice Ministry designated TV Rain a foreign agent in 2021 and added Sindeyeva to the foreign agent registry in 2022. In July 2023, Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office declared TV Rain an undesirable organization.
