Russia’s Gosuslugi government services portal will launch a tool for searching for and purchasing cemetery plots, backed by 295.5 million rubles in funding, the Russian business daily Kommersant reported after reviewing documents from the Digital Development Ministry.

The service is set to launch in 21 regions by December 1, 2026, once information on 14,000 cemeteries has been uploaded to the National System of Spatial Data (NSPD), roughly a fifth of all cemeteries in Russia, according to the newspaper’s calculations.

The Digital Development Ministry stated that the project is currently being piloted in six regions and that a full rollout would bring more transparency to the funeral business.

Alexey Suloyev, president of the Association of Crematoriums of Russia, told the newspaper he agreed the system could help reduce corruption in how burial plots are allocated.

But he said several familiar problems had already surfaced during the pilot phase: data uploads from state registries weren’t seamless, digital records on burial sites were fragmented, and the interactive map sometimes failed to let users select a plot.

In late July, the Russian business daily Kommersant reported that the number of companies providing funeral services in Russia had grown by 22.5% over the past year, a rise experts attributed to the “forced removal of business from the gray zone.”
