On rare trip outside Moscow, Putin visits aviation plant in Siberia

Vladimir Putin paid an unannounced visit to an aviation plant in Irkutsk. State media, including TASS, did not report on the trip until the afternoon of July 24.

The Telegram channel People of Baikal reported that local media and social media channels said that morning that aircraft from the special flight detachment “Rossiya,” which transports senior officials, had landed in Irkutsk. Local residents filmed a government motorcade moving through the city’s streets.

Sergei Chemezov, head of Rostec, and Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev are accompanying Putin on his visit to the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. TASS reported that, together with plant director Andrei Soinov, they will “inspect the production facilities where the new Russian medium-haul MS-21 passenger jet is being put into serial production.”

The last previously reported trip Putin took to a Russian region was in June 2026, for the Russia–ASEAN summit in Kazan. Before that, he attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in May. From January through May, Putin left Moscow only twice, both times for St. Petersburg.

In May, iStories, CNN, and the Financial Times, citing a report by intelligence services of a European country, reported that Russia’s Federal Protective Service had significantly increased measures to protect Vladimir Putin because he fears a possible assassination attempt.
