Britain imposes world’s first sanctions on Russian ‘shadow fleet’ vessels carrying LNG

Source: Meduza

Britain has prepared a new sanctions package targeting Russia — the first anywhere in the world to include measures against vessels carrying Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The package also targets a network linked to Russian authorities that has been involved in the covert procurement of Western technology for the Russian military, the British government said.

Also included are sanctions against companies in third countries that have helped Russia move money illegally around the world.

The British government said the package will be presented on June 16, when the G7 summit opens in Évian, France.

On June 14, the British government announced that the country’s armed forces had for the first time detained a tanker from Russia’s “shadow fleet” that was attempting to pass through the English Channel.
