First no tanks for Moscow’s Victory Day parade. Now no concert at Red Square. Russia’s holiday spectacles are shrinking.
A concert planned for Russia Day on June 12 at Red Square in Moscow has been canceled, the Russian news outlet Msk1 reported on June 11.
Meduza was unable to find any announcement of the concert among the holiday events listed on the Moscow mayor’s office website for that day. A holiday concert broadcast has been announced on Russia 1, scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. on June 12.
Updates. According to media reports, the concert set to air on Russia 1 will take place on June 11 at CSKA Arena in Moscow. It was billed as a holiday concert for Russia Day.
The Red Square concert, titled “In the Unity of the Peoples Lies the Strength of Russia,” had previously been announced by the team of singer Nadezhda Babkina, Msk1 reports. It was expected to feature Shaman, Larisa Dolina, Alexander Buynov, and other musicians.
The concert has been moved to the Mossoviet Cultural Center on Preobrazhenskaya Square, according to Msk1.
The independent outlet Agentstvo notes that holiday events tied to Russia Day will not be held at Red Square for the first time since 2003.
On May 9, the Victory Day parade was held on Red Square — for the first time since 2007 without military hardware. Russia’s Defense Ministry explained the decision by citing “the current operational situation.”
Red Square in Moscow continues to host large-scale events, however. A book festival ran there from June 4 to 7.
