TikTok bans wave of bloggers, some with millions of followers, over ads for Russian drone assembly college

TikTok has banned a wave of accounts that promoted “Alabuga Polytech” in Tatarstan. Blogger Alexey Gubanov was among the first to flag the bans.

“A whole bunch of TikTokers were blocked all at the same time — it’s hard even to count the exact number right now, but there are quite a few of them,” Gubanov said.

The independent Russian media outlet Mediazona reports that the banned accounts include popular bloggers otesayy (1.4 million followers) and typahanter (780,700 followers).

This is at least the second major wave of TikTok account bans for promoting Alabuga Polytech. During the first wave in early May, the account of Yan Shaimukhamedov (ynchq) was banned, among others — he had around 11.9 million followers before the ban.

In April, Twitch carried out mass bans of users who had promoted Alabuga Polytech.

Users are banned under international sanctions against Russia. Because Alabuga Polytech is sanctioned by the EU, social media platforms operating there cannot provide it with advertising services.
